Known for “Bosco Verticale” in Milan, architects Boeri Studio have chosen to bring as many plants and trees found on the nearby Utrechtse Heuvelrug onto the external of the Wonderwoods towers that rise above the Utrecht skyline. The story behind the wayfinding for Wonderwoods connects to this artificial nature reserve that is created by people, just as the Utrechtse Heuvelrug was after it was completely cut down for timber: we, the Dutch, take pride in creating nature to our taste and best interest. The maintenance of our nature is done by forest workers in its own sign language and spray painted on trees in neon code.
It is this colour that has the maximum contrast to nature itself, and it is this colour that I chose for the wayfinding in Wonderwoods to show some of this pride. To carry the proud feeling of being one of the inhabitants of Wonderwoods, all tenants are given a keyring made of the exact same material of the wayfinding, letting them carry Wonderwoods into the city.
