The oldest and most famous zoo in The Netherlands is Artis in Amsterdam. Few know its full name, which is "Natura Artis Magistra”, Latin for "Nature is the teacher of art”. Keeping this in mind, we set out to design a new wayfinding system. Nature is about growth, adapting itself in endless iterations to perfection.
Growth and perfection from every angle became the leading idea behind the design. The poles rise from the soil and are reduced in thickness in steps the higher they grow, much like something simple yet beautiful as a leek is formed. The colour is dark at the bottom, making the element almost disappear into its surroundings at eye level. Bright colours are only added on the spots where they are really needed, for close attention or to be seen from afar. From the pole, the fingers of the fingerpointers fold out like leaves and can be seen from far.
